Sink Strainers for Indian Kitchens: Drain Fit, Basket Access and Cleaning
Choose a sink strainer by its interface with your existing drain, then check how you will lift, empty and clean it. A wide rim alone does not establish fit: a basket may still be too deep, foul a stopper or leave an unsupported edge. Start by deciding whether you need a loose food catcher, a replacement basket for an existing fitting, or a complete drain assembly.

Product comparison at a glance
| Product | What you are buying | Dimensions and care | Main purchase consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
OXO Silicone Sink Strainer 1308200 | Removable silicone/steel catcher; centre lift post; basket inverts for emptying | Overall 4.4 × 4.4 × 1.6 inches; dishwasher care | Insertion diameter, compatible drain range and stopper clearance missing |
IKEA LILLVIKEN 303.254.27 | Complete one-bowl water-trap/strainer assembly with stopper | 40 mm outlet, or 50 mm using maker's specified arrangement; mild soapy cleaning and drying | Outlet size is not basket diameter; installation and sink compatibility required; not a drop-in alternative to OXO |

Consider the OXO only when you need a loose catcher for an existing drain and can confirm its insertion fit. Consider LILLVIKEN when replacing a compatible complete trap and strainer assembly. They solve different purchasing needs, so compare the type of part before price or material. Drainage and food-capture performance have not been independently tested.
Choose by the job you need done
| Your situation | What to investigate | Main question before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| You want a removable catcher over the existing drain | Loose strainer with a supported rim and accessible lift point | Does the part beneath its rim fit without touching existing hardware? |
| Your sink already has a removable basket that is missing or damaged | Manufacturer-compatible replacement basket | Does its stem, seating surface and stopper mechanism match the fitting? |
| The fixed drain fitting needs replacement | Complete fitting or plumbing assembly | Which sink opening, seals and outlet connections does the exact assembly require? |
| You also need to hold water in the bowl | Documented stopper function or compatible separate stopper | How does it switch between draining and sealing? |
Make a drain-fit record before browsing
For a loose accessory, record the visible dimensions without dismantling the fixed drain. Photograph the opening from above with a ruler beside it, then sketch the profile you can see. Keep the following measurements separate rather than writing only “sink size”.
| Record | What you are identifying | What to ask the seller for |
|---|---|---|
| Clear opening | Space the inserted basket must enter | Maximum insertion diameter, including any projections |
| Seating area | Surface available to support the rim | Rim diameter and underside shape |
| Clear depth | Space before the basket meets existing hardware | Depth below the seating rim, not just total height |
| Centre hardware | Any post, screw or stopper beneath the proposed catcher | Required clearance or a compatibility drawing |
| Lift access | Space around the handle or centre post | How the basket is removed when the bowl contains utensils |
This worksheet is an editorial buying aid, not a plumbing tolerance specification. Give measurements in millimetres and label what each number represents. A photograph cannot establish a hidden connection size. If replacement requires access beneath the sink, use the sink manufacturer's documentation or ask an installer to identify the fitting.
Why one advertised diameter is insufficient
Consider a hypothetical opening measuring 80 mm and an accessory with a 110 mm outer rim. Those two numbers do not prove that it fits. An 85 mm insertion basket would not enter the measured opening; a narrower basket could still be too deep. Equally, a rim that spans the opening on paper may not sit evenly on the actual surrounding surface.
Ask for the missing profile dimensions before treating a listing as a match. Do not infer them by scaling a marketing photograph. Keep the order on hold when a seller can confirm only the outer diameter.
Two documented examples, with different purposes
OXO Silicone Sink Strainer: an emptying mechanism to examine
OXO identifies this as SKU 1308200, made from silicone and stainless steel, with overall dimensions of 4.4 × 4.4 × 1.6 inches. Its centre post provides a lift point, and the silicone basket inverts for emptying. The page marks it dishwasher-safe. These are documented design features, not our usability findings. Source: OXO product page
The page does not establish the insertion diameter, a compatible drain-opening range or clearance around your stopper. The overall dimensions therefore cannot answer the worksheet on their own. Ask for those details before considering this exact model for an Indian sink. We have not verified a local offer or tested whether the post is convenient with wet hands.
IKEA LILLVIKEN: recognise a plumbing assembly
The Indian LILLVIKEN 303.254.27 page describes a one-bowl water trap/strainer, including a stopper. It lists polypropylene tubes, a stainless-steel strainer and basket, and synthetic-rubber seals. The stated 40 mm outlet, or 50 mm after the manufacturer's specified cutting arrangement, concerns drain-pipe connection. It is not the removable basket's diameter. Source: IKEA India product page
Treat this as an assembly requiring a compatibility and installation check, not a drop-in alternative to the OXO accessory. The page did not establish that its basket fits another brand's housing. IKEA specifies mild soapy cleaning and drying, avoiding abrasive powder, steel wool and hard or sharp tools. Its installation guidance calls for professional help when uncertain. The IKEA page currently states that this article is not sold online; store supply and delivery remain unverified.
Check the emptying routine as carefully as fit
Imagine the actual sequence at your sink: identify the lift point, remove the catcher, carry it to your scraps container, empty it and return it to its seat. Decide where it will rest while you clean it. These are practical layout questions; a claim such as “easy clean” does not answer them.
Look for access to the underside and any junction between materials. Ask whether the basket separates from the rim and whether that separation is an intended cleaning step. Follow the exact care instructions rather than assuming every metal-looking strainer can go in a dishwasher. Do not transfer the OXO care permission to another product.
Avoid selecting by unsupported promises to catch every rice grain, eliminate smells or prevent all drain blockages. No comparative capture or drainage test was available for this guide. If fine-food retention matters to you, request the documented opening size and consider that separately from the basket's overall fit.
Questions worth resolving before checkout
Does a strainer also work as a plug?
Only when the exact product documents a sealing function. A basket that catches scraps may continue to let water drain. For an existing combined basket and stopper, identify the replacement part rather than choosing a similar-looking stem.
Is stainless steel enough information?
It identifies a material description, not all the dimensions, mechanisms or care requirements you need. Check the complete assembly, including its rim, handle and any seals. Our kitchen-tool material guide explains how to distinguish documented specifications from broad claims.
Should you buy a multipack for both bowls?
Measure each drain independently and confirm that both accept the same part. A spare has value only if it fits and serves an intended purpose. Use the multipack checklist to compare the pieces you will actually use.
Before ordering, keep the exact SKU, dimension drawing, care instructions and seller's compatibility response together. Those records provide a clearer basis for resolving a mismatch than a general “universal fit” label. Send a documented correction through our corrections policy.
