Food Storage and Kitchen Organisation
How to Measure Your Fridge Before Buying Organisers
Measure each refrigerator shelf or drawer you intend to organise, rather than choosing bins from the fridge's litre rating. You need both a place for the organiser to sit and a route for taking it out. Door pockets, vents, shelf lips and handles can make the usable space smaller than it first appears.

Start with the narrow IKEA box for grouping smaller items under a lid. Consider the rotating organiser for access to bottles and jars when the minimum shelf area is available. Compare the wheeled bin when pulling a group forward solves your access problem. Added bins do not establish better cooling or longer food storage.
Decide what the organiser must do
Choose one problem to solve first: keeping small packets together, making bottles easier to reach, or grouping containers that otherwise get lost at the back. List the items you want inside the bin and measure their tallest or widest examples.
Consider whether you need a removable open bin, a lidded container or a pull-out drawer. A lid needs opening space, while a drawer needs travel space. A narrow bin may suit one group of items but create extra work if you must unload it to reach the item you use most often.
Avoid buying a complete matching set before checking one intended position. Different shelves and door pockets may need different sizes, or may work better without an added organiser.
Record the actual shelf dimensions
Use a tape measure and record measurements in one unit. Take readings at the narrowest usable points, including projections from the side walls or shelf fittings. Note the current shelf positions so you can distinguish the layout you use from one you might change later.
Measure clear width, usable depth and height above the shelf. Height should include the space needed to grip and remove the organiser, not just its closed height. Record any shelf lip the bin must clear on the way out.
Take a shelf at a time, closing the refrigerator between measurements. Follow the appliance instructions if a shelf or drawer needs to be removed or repositioned. Do not force fittings or treat an adjustable shelf as removable without checking its mechanism.
Mark the areas that must stay clear
Locate the vents and any other restricted areas in your exact refrigerator's manual. Mark them on your sketch before arranging bins. Do not turn every visible gap into storage space.
Samsung India's guidance calls for clear internal air vents and space between stored items, and says items should not obstruct door closure. These constraints belong in the fit check. Samsung India airflow and door guidance.
Vent locations vary. LG India's explanation of DoorCooling+ describes vents at the front for that technology. This is a model-specific example, not a vent-location map for every refrigerator. LG India DoorCooling+ explanation.
Use the clearances and restrictions for your appliance. There is no universal gap in this worksheet. An organiser that physically fits can still be unsuitable if its position blocks a required airflow path.
Check the door and removal route
Look at how door pockets project into the compartment when the door closes. A bin may sit within the shelf's front edge and still collide with a pocket or bottle. Check the intended arrangement without pushing or forcing the door.
Measure the opening available at the door angle you can normally achieve in your kitchen. A nearby wall may limit that angle. Check whether the bin can pass through the opening without tipping its contents or scraping the door seal.
For a drawer organiser, check both the drawer's inside dimensions and the route needed to pull out the drawer. A tall insert can fit inside a drawer but interfere with the shelf above when you try to remove it.
If you already have a clean, empty container of similar dimensions, use it to rehearse placement and removal. This can reveal access problems, but it does not verify the proposed product's material, load capacity or refrigerator suitability.
Compare external and internal bin measurements
Use external dimensions to check fit in the fridge. Use internal dimensions to check whether your bottles, packets or existing food containers fit inside the organiser. Wall thickness, tapered sides and handles can make these measurements different.
Confirm whether the stated size includes the lid, feet and projecting handles. For a telescopic or hanging drawer, ask for its fitted dimensions and the shelf types it is designed to attach to. Do not assume that “adjustable” means compatible with every shelf thickness or shape.
Avoid adding a hanging attachment where the refrigerator or organiser instructions do not establish suitability. A measurement worksheet cannot establish the load capacity of a glass shelf or its fittings.
Complete a fit record for each position
| Measurement or check | Record | Use it to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Clear shelf width | Narrowest usable width | Number and orientation of bins |
| Usable depth | Space after door and vent restrictions | Bin depth with handle included |
| Height | Clearance above the intended position | Lid, grip and removal space |
| Opening | Available route at normal door angle | Whether the bin can come out |
| Drawer travel | Space for opening and removal | Suitability of inserts or pull-outs |
| Organiser size | External and internal dimensions | Fridge fit and contents fit |
Label each record with the refrigerator model and the intended shelf or drawer. If you change shelf positions, measure again rather than reusing a record for a different arrangement.
Choose the smallest practical addition that solves the problem you identified. Keep access routes and required airflow space clear, then review the arrangement during normal use before adding more bins. Treat unresolved dimensions or compatibility as information to obtain before purchase.
