How to Match Dish Rack Dimensions to Your Kitchen Sink

Choose a dish rack by measuring the place where its feet or mounts will sit, the route water will take and the space occupied by loaded dishes. Sink width alone does not establish fit. A rack beside the sink, one above it and one resting across it require different measurements and documented support arrangements.

Measure the supporting surface first

Record the clear counter width and depth next to the sink. Include the raised sink rim, tap base, wall projections and anything that cannot move. Distinguish a flat, supporting surface from a sloping drainboard or an opening over the sink.

The drainers above are not established here as telescopic racks that bridge a sink opening. Do not infer permission to span a gap from the fact that the outside dimensions appear wide enough. A bridging product needs its own supported-span and installation instructions.

Use the dimensions of the selected product, not its carton. If a listing gives several triples without naming their meaning, resolve that before planning a close fit. Accessories, feet or projecting handles may change the space needed by the arrangement you actually buy.

RINNIG: compare the tray and plate holder together

The reversible RINNIG tray can collect water or direct it towards the sink. Decide which arrangement works in your kitchen before assuming the water will drain away automatically. A raised rim or an unsuitable counter position may interrupt the intended route.

The separate plate holder occupies only part of the tray's nominal footprint. That remaining area is not a verified capacity for a particular number of bowls or cups: their bases, handles and placement determine how much fits. The manufacturer's nine-plate description also does not prove that nine large thalis or deeply curved plates will sit comfortably.

Check the combined purchase contents. A tray-only offer will not provide upright plate support, while the holder-only offer does not supply a water-collection surface. Their hand-washing instructions also make access to the individual pieces relevant during cleanup.

ORDNING: a taller freestanding alternative

Consider ORDNING when you prefer two drying levels on the counter and have enough overhead clearance. Its listed length and width are 50 × 27 cm, while the unloaded rack is 36 cm high. Check the height of your plates above the upper support, the clearance below cupboards and access for lifting items out.

IKEA lists stainless steel and hand washing. Its stated 29-plate capacity and maximum plate diameter of 32 cm describe the maker's intended plate arrangement; they do not establish capacity for a mixed load of thalis, bowls and cookware. The perforated lower surface visible in the photograph is not a sealed water reservoir. Plan where drips will land and how you will clean beneath the rack.

The photograph shows an ORDNING display in Delft in 2020. It illustrates the named design, not proof of the exact current Indian supplied variant; the caption preserves that distinction.

KUNGSFORS: allow room to remove the collecting tray

KUNGSFORS is listed for worktop use, direct wall mounting or a compatible suspension system. Its 60 cm width and 30 cm depth give an initial footprint, but the loaded dishes can extend beyond the rack's 10 cm height. Measure the tallest arrangement you intend to use against cupboards, taps and shelves.

The removable collecting tray adds a retrieval task. Allow enough room to withdraw and empty it without moving unrelated countertop items. A position that fits the bare rack but traps the tray is not a useful layout.

For wall mounting, the wall and fixings become part of the purchase. The examined page requires suitable anchoring and lists wall fixings separately. A rack's mounting option does not establish that every tiled or partition wall can support the proposed loaded arrangement.

Check a normal washing load

List what usually dries together: dinner plates, katoris, glasses, a saucepan lid and perhaps a pressure-cooker component. Compare that mixed load with the rack's actual support positions. A plate-count headline says little about bulky cookware that occupies several positions.

Also account for reaching into the sink and operating the tap. A loaded rack should not require an awkward route around projecting dishes whenever you wash another item. For a small counter, reserving usable sink access may matter more than choosing the largest rack that can physically fit.

Make the final fit decision

Choose the RINNIG arrangement when its supported footprint and intended drainage direction suit the counter. Consider KUNGSFORS when the wider arrangement and removable tray suit the available space, with a verified mounting solution if needed. Choose ORDNING when its taller two-level arrangement fits beneath the cupboards and you have planned for water beneath it. Compare the complete setup, including separately sold pieces.

These measurements support screening, not a universal sink-fit guarantee. We have not tested dish stability, drainage speed or loaded capacity. The practical choice is the one whose support, water route, loaded clearance and cleaning access all fit the kitchen together.
