Kitchen Shelf Risers for Rented Homes: Shallow and Deep Inserts Compared
For a rented kitchen, a freestanding shelf insert is worth considering when the cupboard has unused height above short items. Choose its depth around the things you want to store, then check that both the upper and lower spaces remain accessible. This comparison covers two documented sizes within IKEA's VARIERA range.

Product comparison at a glance
| Product | Published width × depth × height | Consider it for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
VARIERA shallow insert, 701.777.26 | 32 × 13 × 16 cm | A narrow row of items where a deep platform would get in the way | Limited depth; check that the entire item base is supported |
VARIERA deep insert, 501.777.27 | 32 × 28 × 16 cm | A broader platform where the cupboard has enough depth | Takes more shelf area and can make the space beneath harder to reach |

Which size would we choose?
Choose the shallow insert when your intended items fit on its platform and you want to preserve more of the cupboard's depth. Choose the deeper insert when the item footprint needs broader support. Both have the same published width and height, so moving to the deep version changes depth rather than increasing vertical clearance.
We have not tested load capacity, slipping or assembly quality. The inspected product pages do not provide a numerical maximum load. A metal construction alone is not enough evidence to recommend either insert for heavy appliances or large grocery sacks.
Shallow insert: keep a narrow row visible
The 13 cm depth suits a different arrangement from a full-depth platform. Before choosing it, measure the bases of the jars or cups you intend to place on top. Do not count a handle as part of the supporting base, and do not balance an item on an overhanging edge merely to fit more pieces.
IKEA specifies coated steel and wiping with a damp cloth. The page also describes connecting compatible inserts with supplied screws. Follow the assembly instructions for that arrangement; placing unrelated risers on top of one another is not equivalent to the documented connection.
Deep insert: use the space above shorter items
The 28 cm version gives a larger platform within the same range. IKEA describes putting a shallow insert above the deeper one and connecting inserts using the included hardware. This is an optional configuration, not a reason to buy two before checking your cupboard height.
The deeper model is also coated steel with damp-cloth cleaning specified. These care details do not establish outdoor suitability, dishwasher permission or a rust-resistance guarantee for a constantly wet area.
Measure three spaces before ordering
First, measure the cupboard opening at its narrowest point. Hinges, a centre divider and the door can obstruct an insert even when the shelf behind them is wide enough. Then measure the usable shelf depth, allowing the door to close normally.
Finally, split the available height into the lower space, the riser's structure and the items above it. The published 16 cm overall height is not a guarantee of 16 cm clear space underneath. Check the actual clearance if your intended stack is close to that dimension.
Make a paper footprint for each option and place the items you want to store within it. Consider retrieval: can you remove a bowl from below without moving the cups above, and can you see the label on the back jar? An extra level is useful only if it makes your normal routine easier.
Why this arrangement can suit a rental
These inserts sit on an existing shelf, so their basic placement does not require fixing a new shelf to the cupboard. Assembly hardware belongs to the insert arrangement described by the maker. That distinction matters when you want a removable addition.
Keep the supporting surface clean and inspect it before placing the insert. Lift the organiser when repositioning it rather than dragging it across a finish. Freestanding placement does not promise that every surface will remain unmarked.
Buy the size that solves one specific storage problem first. If the cupboard is already filled with tall containers, a riser may divide the height into two spaces that are both too short. In that case, rearranging the existing shelf layout may be more useful than adding another platform.
