Grill Pans for Paneer and Sandwiches in India: Surface and Care Checks
Choose a grill pan by its usable cooking surface, your recipe layout and the instructions for the exact model. A large number in a product title can describe an outer diagonal rather than the width available for bread or paneer. A ridged surface also does not establish oven suitability or permission to use high heat.

Product comparison at a glance
| Product | Key specifications | Why compare it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
Hawkins IGP26G | 20 cm inner width; 26 cm outer diagonal | Induction model with glass lid | No oven/broiler or dishwasher use in reviewed manual |
Hawkins DCGP30 / DCGP30G | 25 cm inner width; 30 cm outer diagonal | Regular gas version; G code includes glass lid | Confirm exact code; no oven/broiler use |
Borosil Vajra NSVJ5SQFP24 | 24 cm nominal; 5 mm die-cast body | Square grill surface | Induction and preheating statements conflict |
This research-based guide examines Hawkins die-cast models and a Borosil Vajra square pan. We have not cooked paneer or sandwiches in them, measured browning or tested cleaning. Current offer availability and any unresolved model-specific checks should be confirmed before purchase. The models below are models with the limitations described below.

Work out the batch you want to cook
Measure your usual bread slices and record whether you cook one sandwich at a time or several. For paneer, record the piece dimensions, number of pieces and the space your recipe requires between them. Different cuts and fillings should have separate layout notes.
Ask for the pan's usable floor dimensions. An overall handle span, rim measurement or outer diagonal cannot establish how many sandwiches fit. If the maker supplies a dimensioned drawing, compare your food layout with that drawing before relying on a serving claim.
Leave room in the layout for your turning utensil. A theoretical arrangement that fills every corner may be awkward to use. This guide does not establish a maximum batch, cooking time or browning result for either candidate; those would need recipe-specific evidence or testing.
Hawkins: distinguish inner width from outer diagonal
The Hawkins range page lists IGP26G with a glass lid, DCGP30 without a lid and DCGP30G with a glass lid. Each has a stated 3 mm thickness. Listed weights are explicitly in-carton weights, so they should not be used as empty-pan lifting weights.
The IM168 instruction manual distinguishes a 20 cm inner-width / 26 cm outer-diagonal induction model from a 25 cm inner-width / 30 cm outer-diagonal regular gas model. It requires low-to-medium heat, prohibits hot oven or broiler use and dishwasher washing, and specifies non-metal utensils. Cleaning is non-abrasive and along the ridges after cooling.
Its two-year guarantee covers material and workmanship defects under proper use. Wear, replacement plastic handle/knob, ceramic scratches or chips and misuse are excluded. Claims require the cash memo, matching serial-number guarantee card and return at the user's cost. Read the complete manual for model-specific preheating limits and operating details; this guide does not generalize them to another pan.
That geometry distinction changes the purchase comparison. A 26 cm outer diagonal should not be presented as a 26 cm cooking width. Match the received code and dimensions to the manual before choosing a stove or copying a recipe procedure.
Borosil: useful specifications with unresolved instructions
The Borosil Vajra page identifies NSVJ5SQFP24, nominally 24 cm, with a 5 mm die-cast aluminium body and five-layer nonstick coating. Listed dimensions are 26.5 × 7 × 44 cm and weight is 790 g; axes, usable floor, actual base and weight basis need confirmation. The pack lists a pan and manual, with a one-year manufacturing-defect warranty.
The URL mentions induction while the visible feature list specifies gas. That is insufficient to approve induction use. Its care section also combines an empty-heating prohibition with a one-minute preheat instruction in the same bullet. Obtain the exact supplied manual or maker clarification before adopting a preheat procedure.
Other visible care instructions specify low-to-medium heat, cooling before water, warm soapy water and a sponge, and no abrasive cleaners or cutting in the pan. Dishwasher compatibility is claimed. Metal-spoon marketing should not be read as permission to scrape or cut the coating.
Do not transfer facts from the similarly named ceramic version or round grill pan. Exact model matching matters more than the shared Vajra name.
Separate stove grilling from oven use
Check actual base dimensions against your hob's requirements. Induction recognition is a question about the exact variant and hob, not the square shape. For gas, check burner fit and clearance from adjacent cookware, following the maker's heat restrictions.
The word grill in a name does not mean the pan can go under an oven grill. Hawkins explicitly prohibits that use in the examined manual. Oven permissions and handle/lid temperature limits have not been established for the Borosil candidate either, so this guide supplies no oven-finish method.
Do not import a high-heat searing routine from bare cast iron into coated aluminium cookware. Use the chosen model's instructions. Where the instructions are contradictory or incomplete, resolving them is part of the purchase decision.
Decide whether you need a lid
Record whether your intended recipe calls for covering the food and whether you want a supplied lid. The Hawkins codes distinguish packs with and without glass lids. The examined Borosil pack does not establish an included lid.
Avoid assuming that a lid from another vessel is compatible simply because the nominal measurements are close. Confirm fit and permitted use. Do not improvise a weighted lid or sandwich press from the mere availability of a cover.
An open pan also differs from a sandwich maker that heats from two sides. Consider whether manually turning sandwiches suits your routine. If your main aim is preparing enclosed toasted sandwiches with minimal handling, compare that workflow before buying a grill pan solely for appearance.
Include cleaning in the decision
Check whether your sponge or permitted utensil can reach between the ridges and whether the pan fits the sink comfortably. Food-contact area, overall span and storage footprint are separate measurements. Keep the lid's storage needs in your notes where applicable.
Follow exact model care rather than treating all nonstick pans alike. The Hawkins manual prohibits dishwasher washing; the Borosil page claims it. A household that relies on the dishwasher should resolve that difference before purchase, not discover it after receiving the pan.
Do not apply bare cast iron seasoning or abrasive restoration routines to either candidate. Preserve the supplied manual and follow its instructions if residue develops. No coating lifespan or easy-clean result has been tested here.
A worksheet for choosing a candidate
| Decision | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Food layout | Bread dimensions or paneer piece layout, plus turning access |
| Cooking area | Confirmed usable floor width and shape |
| Stove | Exact model compatibility, actual base and hob limits |
| Pack | Pan code, lid inclusion and supplied instructions |
| Handling | Empty-pan weight basis, handle span and sink fit |
| Care | Permitted utensils, heat, washing and storage |
| Offer | Exact variant, seller, delivery and warranty terms |
Consider the Hawkins induction variant when its smaller inner width fits your recipe and the manual suits your routine. Consider the larger regular gas models only with their own stove and layout checks. Keep the Borosil candidate pending until its compatibility and preheat instructions are clarified. Neither is established here as the best performer. If your existing flat pan already handles the meal satisfactorily, decide whether a separate ridged pan adds enough useful function to justify its storage and cleaning work.
